About the Foundation

Who We Are

A community health education organisation registered under the Societies Act of Kenya, based in Uasin Gishu County.

Safe Choices Foundation is a community health education organisation registered under the Societies Act of Kenya (Registration No. SOCF-G5S6EAM). Based in Uasin Gishu County in the Rift Valley, we work with young people, women, and families across our region to close the gap between available health services and the communities that need them.

We were founded on a simple observation: too many people in our communities face preventable health challenges — not because information doesn't exist, but because it doesn't reach them in ways they can trust, understand, and act on. Whether it is a young person navigating questions about their reproductive health, a family managing the daily reality of a lifestyle disease, or a community grappling with the toll of substance abuse, the need is the same — clear, safe, evidence-based information delivered with compassion.

Our Vision
A healthy, informed community with access to the health education and services they need to thrive.
Our Mission
To listen to the health education needs of our communities, provide accessible and evidence-based health information, and link people to the services that can help them make safe choices.
Our approach

How We Work

Community-Centred
We do not arrive with pre-packaged solutions. We listen first, co-design our programmes with the communities we serve, and involve them in every stage of delivery. The community is not the audience — it is the partner.
Evidence-Based
Every piece of health information we share is grounded in current, credible evidence. We take our responsibility to be a trusted source seriously.
Empowerment Through Information
We believe people make safer choices when they have accurate information delivered without judgement. Our role is to equip, not to prescribe.
Integrity
We are honest about what we know, what we don't know, and what we can and cannot do. That honesty is the foundation of the trust our communities place in us.

Our Leadership

Safe Choices Foundation is led by a small board that brings together frontline community health expertise from Kenya, international public health program management, and senior community services leadership from Australia. Between them, they carry lived experience of the Rift Valley communities the Foundation serves and decades of practice in building integrated, evidence-based, community-centred programs. This combination of deep local grounding paired with international program management discipline is what makes Safe Choices Foundation distinctive.

Hillary Rono, Treasurer of Safe Choices Foundation

Hillary Rono

Treasurer

Hillary is a public health and program management professional with seven years of experience delivering complex, multi-stakeholder health programs across Australia and internationally. He holds a Master of Global Public Health from Griffith University, awarded with the Griffith Excellence Scholarship, and a BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Southeastern Kenya University, where he graduated with First Class Honours as Best Student of 2018.

Hillary currently works with the Queensland Government Department of Health, leading initiatives across Quitline Queensland, the state's tobacco and vaping cessation service supporting more than 19,000 clients annually. His prior work with Miwatj Health Aboriginal Corporation in East Arnhem Land placed him at the centre of a federally funded $4.7 million Tackling Indigenous Smoking program across seven remote communities, where a strategic review he led lifted program reach from 45 percent to 70 percent and achieved 100 percent compliance with Australian Government funding requirements.

His international and development experience spans essential medicine access programs in Mozambique and Sierra Leone with the DovEAir Foundation, and child protection work in Makueni and Kajiado Counties with a ChildFund International partner in Kenya, where he helped establish village child protection committees and build referral networks across schools, churches and community groups.

Hillary brings genuine expertise in donor compliance, monitoring and evaluation, workplan and milestone tracking, stakeholder coordination across government and community, and community-led program design. These are the disciplines that turn a good idea into a well-run, accountable, fundable organisation. As Treasurer, he is responsible for the financial stewardship of Safe Choices Foundation, ensuring every shilling entrusted to the Foundation is managed with transparency, discipline, and impact.
